Although it was Griezmann who raced through and chipped the ball left footed into the far corner, it was Mbappe who received the plaudits.

Social media rushed to praise the Paris Saint-Germain forward, one user comparing his technique and awareness to Brazil’s 2002 World Cup winner Ronaldo.

Another suggested that Mbappe is the third best player in the world, after Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and will soon surpass both of them.

Despite his rise, Real Madrid will not look to sign Mbappe from PSG this summer, according to Marca.

The Spanish club have been consistently linked with the 20-year-old as they look for a talisman to replace Ronaldo, who left last summer.

The return of Zinedine Zidane as manager added fuel to the rumours that the France international could be headed for the Spanish capital.

However Mbappe appears set to stay in Paris for now, as he looks to add a European Championship medal to the World Cup triumph he gained with France in Russia last summer.
